Water Safety:

• Never swim alone - always swim with others
• Check weather conditions and tide times before entering the water
• Be aware of currents, rip tides, and undertows, especially at beaches
• Cold water shock is a serious risk even in summer - enter gradually
• River levels can rise rapidly after rain - check conditions
• Waterfalls and river pools may have submerged rocks and hazards
• Wear appropriate gear including wetsuit in cold conditions

Beach Swimming:

• Only swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible
• Swim between the red and yellow flags at lifeguarded beaches
• Never swim near cliffs or rocky outcrops
• Be aware of tide times - some beaches become dangerous at high tide
• Check for warning signs and flags before entering

Wild Swimming:

• Research locations carefully - not all spots are safe for swimming
• Water quality can vary - avoid swimming after heavy rain
• Be cautious of hidden currents in rivers and estuaries
• Waterborne diseases (Weil’s disease) can be present in fresh water
• Never dive into water unless you know it’s deep and clear of hazards
• Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return
